The
Towpath Trail is a multi-purpose trail that will eventually run 110
miles from New Philadelphia to Cleveland along the old Ohio & Erie
Canal. In the Cleveland area, the trail currently ends at Harvard Road
and 49th Street and picks up again for 1.75 miles through
the new Steelyard Commons.
The Wendy Park Foundation is committed to connecting
the Towpath Trail to Wendy Park at Whiskey Island and Lake Erie by
funding 1.2 miles of the trail to the South of Wendy Park. The
Wendy Park Foundation proposes utilizing the Willow Street Bridge,
to offer pedestrian and bike traffic the ability to cross the Old
River Channel from Whiskey Island on to Elm Street. The path would then travel
along the west side of the Cuyahoga River (River Bend Street) and through
the Scranton Peninsula to approximately Scranton Road beneath the Hope
Memorial Bridge. This path would provide travelers a unique journey
through a blend of Cleveland’s industrial past and present
and neighborhoods and provide a unique blend of nature and industry
for its travelers. From these 1.2 miles of trail, connectors
could provide access to Cleveland neighborhoods and the future Canal
Basin Park on the Canal Basin Peninsula.
The final connection from the Towpath to Wendy Park
and Lake Erie will be through the proposed “Golden Spike Bridge”. This pedestrian
and bike only bridge would provide visitors and residents of northeast
Ohio the ability to cross the train tracks and enjoy Wendy Park and Lake
Erie.. Ultimately this connectivity will unite communities
and spur economic development along the way by making Cleveland an even
more desirable place to work, live and play.
